GLOSSARY
OF
INTERNET TERMS
BANDWIDTH
Bandwidth has a general meaning of how much information
can be carried in a given time period (usually a second)
over a wired or wireless communications link.
BROADBAND
In general, broadband refers to data transmission in
which a wide band of frequencies is available to transmit
information.
CABLE MODEM
A device that allows you to connect your PC to our High
Speed Internet service. Cable modems are capable of
transmitting data at very high speeds.
DCT (DIGITAL CONSUMER TERMINAL)
A DCT is a device that connects to the cable coming
into your home. A DCT allows you to view digital channels
on your television. A DCT also features an interactive
program guide, parental controls and it allows you to
order Pay-Per-View movies and events right from the
terminal.
DIGITAL CABLE
A method of compressing and transmitting data (television
signals). Because digital data is smaller, more information
can be transmitted. The result is a better picture,
better sound and more channels. Customers require a
DCT to receive digital channels in their home.
DOWNLOAD
When you receive files from another computer into your
PC.
EMAIL CLIENT
A program used to retrieve your email from the Internet
and store it on your PC.
FIREWALL
A firewall is a program that prevents other people on
the Internet from accessing your computer and your files.

protocol and is the simplest way to exchange files between
computers on the Internet. FTP servers are usually used
by an ISP to allow customers to upload their personal
webpages.
HUB
A piece of hardware that can be used to network computers
together. Using a hub will allow you to connect up to
three computers onto our High Speed Standard or High
Speed Pro service.
IP ADDRESS
An IP address is a 32-bit number that identifies each
sender or receiver of information that is sent in packets
across the Internet.
ISP
An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company that
provides individuals and other companies access to the
Internet.
NIC
Network Interface Card. Allows you to connect your computer
to a network. A PC is connected to our High Speed Internet
service by connecting a NIC to a cable modem.
POP SERVER
This is the server on Cogeco's network to which you
send your email in order for it to reach it's intended
recipient on the Internet.
PROTOCOL
A protocol is a special set of rules that computers
in a network use when they communicate together.
ROUTER
A piece of hardware that can be used to network computers
together. Because a router shares the same IP address
with all the computers, you can connect more than the
3 PCs allowed on our High Speed Standard or Pro service.
SERVER
A server is a computer program that provides services
to other computer programs. Some examples of services
are sending e-mails, receiving e-mails, transmitting
files and sending webpages. For example, an http server
stores webpages which are transmitted to your browser
to be viewed on your PC.
SMTP SERVER
This is the server to which you send your email in order
for it to reach it's intended recipient on the Internet.
